BC1 continued their strong
run-in last night as they looked to cement third place in Division One
with a dramatic victory over Dawson Group.
Having dropped only two
points from the last 21, Bunky’s fielded a slightly jaded team
following their disappointing performance at the weekend in the Ryan Pearce
Memorial Cup –
with Ritchie Armstrong (goal) and Matty Rogers (midfield) replacing weekend
casualties.
The first half saw an even
game with both teams creating few chances, Bunky’s playing on
the break as Dawson Group defended high up the pitch, but the deadlock was
broken as
Mark Rogers ran onto a long free kick from Gazza and coolly slotted the ball
home.
Parity was restored shortly
after, however, as Ritchie Armstrong undid some fine work near the
end of the half when a shot somehow eluded him at the near post, leaving the
scores tied at 1-1
going into the second half.
Mid-way through the half
Dawson capitalised on a loose ball and went 2-1 up, very much against
the run of play as Bunky’s had exploited the gaps and seen numerous one-on-one
efforts saved
by the Dawson ‘keeper.
At this point, BC1 came to
life and began fighting back and with just a few minutes remaining,
Mark Rogers collected the ball wide right, side-stepped a couple of challenges
as he came
inside onto his favoured left foot and the shot rolled into the net of the
goalie.
Both teams could sense a
victory remaining seconds and, rather than play safe, went for it, with
BC1 emerging victorious as Sean collected and finished with a well taken shot.
BC1 now have one final
league game left, to be played on 14th June and against the confirmed
Division One Champions, MK Utd (after their 5-0 hammering of second placed
Athletico Shenley)
and have one chance left to upset everyone;
Athletico – as had they
won, and BC1 beat MK Utd, Athletico could have stolen the league, and
MK Utd – who, in an truly
remarkable season, have not dropped a single point all year!
