 Division 1 Charity Cup Night

________________________________________________________________________________

BC1 took to the pitch last night for the inaugural Shenley Leisure Centre Charity Cup. (Yes, this is the one that was
supposed to be played mid-season …. but wasn’t ….), and how they wished they hadn’t!

This new tournament, which this year sees the proceeds donated to the Warwickshire and Northampton Air
Ambulance Service, took a ‘Champions League’ style format (albeit forced by the absenteeism of several clubs),
and Bunky’s were unluckily pitted against the mighty Dawson Group and the League One Winners, MK Utd,
(making up Pool B) - instead of a relatively easy Group that would have contained a combination from Athletico
Shenley, Crownhill Vauxhall and ARG UK (who all made up Pool A).

Fixed? You decide. The draw took place sometime ahead of schedule (again, you decide) .. but at least some
Bunky players were present to watch (read, vet) SLC out-do themselves on the technical front by replacing
the slow, “not quite there yet, no not yet, nearly, hang on, oooh, what’s happened there then?” big PC
presentation with ……. numbered ping pong balls stuffed into balloons ….. I ask you. Will the FA watch
and learn we wonder – them with their poncy bags and celebrities. Actually, to be fair, it worked extremely
well - and BC1 were up first against Dawson!

With a starting line up of Richie. A (in goal), Matty Rogers, Gazza Davies, Rolfey, Richy Moss and Sean, the
game plan was to use the ball, talk (although not about Big Bruv. as Richard suggested) and hold possession.

Not sure what happened exactly but a chat about Big Bruv., in hindsight, would have improved the first half
…(of the only half, but still the first half of the whole – which is what a normal half is, of course, but you know
what I mean).

Dawson closed down the ball quickly and although BC1 had opportunities, Shane was having a rare night in goal
and, eventually, a great knock from wide right saw a Dawson forward connect first time and shoot past Ritchie A.
1-0 to Dawson.

Shortly after, 1 became 2, as a mix-up (and lack of talking) allowed BC1 to get caught on the ball, a simple
knock to the left and the ball once again nestled in the Bunky net.

For some reason, Dawson then became a bit aggressive and after man-handling a couple of players, brought
down Richy Moss as he was about to strike when clean through. A certain goal.

Detracting for a second, the Dawson foul, and his attempt at a punch, followed by the referee’s resulting
(and insulting) failure to award a penalty or send the player off, was quite possible the most incompetent and
bizarre decision this reporter has ever witnessed at any game. Ever. … Well, o.k., maybe not – but it was shocking.

However, from the resulting free kick, justice was served as Rolfey laid the ball back to an unmarked Gaz
who struck the ball home past a stranded Shane.

Take that!

Bunky’s continued to play the better football and create the better chances and an opportunity arose to
level the game after Dawson’s had encroached into the area (I think with the whole team, as they were right
on the back foot) and a penalty was awarded.

From the resulting spot kick, Rolfey levelled the score, sending Shane the wrong way!

Enough time still on the clock to score a winner – but again, despite some well worked chances, it wasn’t
to be and so the first game ended level with both teams taking a point.

I won’t bore you with details of the other group matches – but Athletico Shenley beat ARG 3-2 in the opening
game, nearly throwing a 3-0 lead.

The second Pool B game saw MK Utd come from behind to record a 2-1 victory over Dawson Group,
leaving Bunky’s needing just a point to secure a place in the semi-finals.

In Pool A, the second match saw ARG UK surprisingly beat Crownhill 1-0 to leave Crownhill with a must-win
final game against Athletico Shenley.

In the final Pool B game, Bunky’s took to the pitch quite confidently against MK Utd, having seen a rather
strange display from them against Dawson Group and only just managing to record the victory. However,
it wasn’t to be, and BC1 found themselves a goal down after one of their players skipped past every man and
his dog and crashed the ball home.

Bunky’s fought back well and Sean de Fraine managed to knock an equaliser and take his BC1 goal tally to 23
for the season …. from 23 games.

MK Utd managed to break left, however, and score a second (again rather too easily) before a controversial
decision (yes, same ref.) saw what appeared to be a perfectly good goal ruled out for MK Utd, and the result
stood at 2-1.

This left BC1 and Dawson Group exactly level with both having accumulated a massive one point, a
minus 1 goal difference, scoring 3 and conceding 4 … and contesting the toss of a coin …!

Needless to say, BC1 lost this, although much confusion surrounded the final decision (yes, same ref.)
as Dawson seemed to call Heads and Tails, before the coin hit the ….. what? mat?

So BC1 went out ……

Following the football, the first ‘Ryan Pearce Fair Play Award’ was given to MK Utd, with a very fitting,
eloquent and well presented speech from David Hall (SLC Chief Executive)
fully appreciated by Bunky Chollox, many thanks
and MK Utd/Athletico Shenley collected their League One trophies.

As for the rest of the games, Crownhill lost to Athletico Shenley in Pool B, the rain came down and the
rest of the competition was postponed. The end.

 Unlucky Bunky’s.
