25th April 2006 - BCI vs. Inter Minan
BCI 5-3 Inter Minan
BC1 finished their league
campaign on a high last night with a convincing victory over Inter Minan and
replacing them in third spot on goal difference. Although Inter still have a
game in hand, it’s against MK United, themselves looking for that final win to
seal the title for the second consecutive year, so promises to be an interesting
game.
Bunky’s only change at the
start of the match saw Danny replace Rolfey in midfield, and, playing in front
of potential new sponsors, BC1 looked relaxed, confident and knocked the ball
around well.
Both Sean and Rich went
close in the opening few minutes but pushing forward Bunky’s lacked numbers in
support and when breaking from defence there were huge gaps in the Inter
midfield that went unexploited.
The first goal, when it
finally came shortly before half time, saw a what could happen when Bunky’s did
make use of the space and as Danny released the ball, Gaz went through to place
the ball into the far corner from the right.
Second half saw much of the
same although some wonderful opportunities and approach play were wasted through
poor finishing, particularly from Rich Moss, who was instrumental in many of the
attacks, but couldn’t seem to convert anything.
Despite some of the
intricate play the second goal, coming mid-way through the half, had an element
of fortune as Rich won the ball on the edge of the Inter area and it broke loose
to Sean who swivelled a struck a fine first time effort that flew into the net.
This was when the game
really livened up as Inter attacked straight from kick-off and when they somehow
managed to squeeze the ball past Russ from the corner, their forwards were first
to react and the resulting shot beat Disco at his near post.
Again BC1 continued to
knock the ball around and when Gaz put the ball into the net from a free-kick on
the edge of the area, there was considerable disbelief as the Ref. disallowed
the goal and awarded a re-take for pushing. Fortunately, Inter hadn’t learnt,
Sean again laid the ball back and Gaz scored his second of the night with a shot
into the opposite corner.
Immediately from the
kick-off, however, Inter bore down on the Bunky defence again and once more
reduced the deficit as a rather tame shot beat Disco and rolled in off the far
post, this time from the opposite side of the pitch.
BC1 kept going and when the
Inter ‘keeper came rushing out of the area, a penalty was awarded and all eyes
were on one player as Gaz stepped up to strike the ball home and claim his first
Bunky hat-trick, to extend the lead again to two goals.
This time, however, Bunky’s
held firm and shortly after they scored the pick of the bunch, working the ball
out from defence down the right hand side, where Sean knocked it into Danny who
turned, and with the deftest of touches, flicked the ball past the stranded
‘keeper with the outside of his boot.
Still Inter kept coming
though and there was time for one more as a mis-kick completely wrong footed
Disco (nearly leaving him with a permanent falsetto voice) and somehow rolling
into the net.
Too little, too late and
Bunky’s ended the season with a well deserved victory, but only their third of
the year. In fact, since the Christmas break, they have taken just 9 points from
a possible 24, dropping 15, which is the same number (should MK United win their
game in hand) that they end the season off top spot …
This leaves just the Charity
Cup now on 16th May for BC1 to earn some silverware but hopefully,
this victory is a return to form and they may just be able to surprise a few
yet.
