16th May 2006 - BCI Charity Cup Night
And so another
cup comes and goes …..
BC1 were a tad
unlucky, to be honest, playing some good football and defending resolutely –
although a 2 minute spell of madness in the final game was to cost them dear.
Drawn in Group
1 with MK United, Debenhams and Argash, the games were played without a break
and just seven minutes long.
Bunky’s first
match was against MK United, a tough opening game, that saw United run out 1-0
victors.
BC1 created
enough opportunities to take something from the match but couldn’t convert,
with Gaz going close and the ‘keeper blocking from Sean and Rich.
Nervous at
first, BC1 took a while to get into their rhythm, but when they did, played
much of the better football, unlucky at the end when a United shot on the
break deflected off Gaz’s studs and just eluded Disco.
With Argash
beating Debenham’s 2-0 in the other Group game, BC1 now needed two victories
to make sure of qualification – but had played well enough to have
confidence.
The second
match saw BC1 face Debenhams and a team change, after Russ had to rush off and
Daz took his place at the back.
BC1 never
looked threatened and made all the running, taking the lead when Gaz played
the ball though to Sean from defence and he placed the ball beyond the
‘keeper.
Although some
of the touches were a bit suspect – and some of the passing woeful at times,
enough of the class shone through to ensure that the result was the right
one.
The other Group
game saw MK United beat Argash 2-0, leaving Bunky’s task clear. Both Bunky’s
and Argash had won and lost – and held a zero goal difference. Argash,
however, has scored 2 and so BC1 needed a win. Anything else would see them
make an early exit.
As the teams
lined up, BC1 again worked the ball well and created chances. Time after time,
however, the passing was weak and it was this and the shambolic defending for
a short period of time that let Argash in to take a 1-0 lead.
Bunky’s
remained confident and focussed and when Gaz again played the ball from deep
to Sean, who turned and fired past the ‘keeper, they were on top and should
have gone on to seal the win.
Unfortunately,
time was against them and the second goal never came, indeed, one more goal in
any game would have taken them through … but it was a draw and therefore an
early bath …
MK United ran
out the winners, winning on penalties following a 2-2 draw with Athletico
Shenley, although there were more than a few comments muttered over the
eligibility of at least one United player …
